The short version
- Accounts first, then forms, then offers.
- Watch for requests from schools for more information.
- Each step has its own date, set by different organizations.
Step by step
- Create StudentAid.gov accounts for the student and any contributors.
- Note federal, state and school dates on one calendar.
- Complete the FAFSA and any state or school form.
- Read the FAFSA Submission Summary for errors.
- Respond to any school request for more documents.
- Read each aid offer when it arrives.
Verification
Some students are selected to confirm their information. This is routine. The school will say which documents it needs.
Keep a record
Write down when you submitted each form and save confirmation pages.
If you get stuck
The financial aid office at your school, a school counselor, or StudentAid.gov help pages are the right places to ask.
